Welcome to High Point!

Welcome to the High Point Neighborhood Website! Located in West Seattle, High Point is the largest master-planned community developed by the Seattle Housing Authority and was designed to be the most progressive environmentally friendly community in the country. It is situated on 120 acres in the middle of West Seattle, and is one of Seattle’s most diverse neighborhoods. When completed in 2010, it will be home to over 4,000 people residing in approximately 1,600 homes. About half of all homes will be owned by individual homeowners; with the other half rental homes. While the majority of rental homes are designated for people with low incomes, some will be rented at market rates.

This website is hosted by the High Point Neighborhood Association to help further it's mission of fostering the development of a vibrant and caring community committed to service, inclusiveness, lifelong learning, and well-being. Neighbors are invited to contribute to the website by e-mailing any of the Neighborhood Association members or the webmaster!

News Submission: Trash Pickup Update

Posted July 1st, 2008 by Anna / Filed under: Uncategorized / 3 Comments »

High Point resident Roger Milnes, sent in this article, asking us to join him in thanking local youth for keeping our neighborhood so clean!

You may have noticed the refreshing absence of litter on the streets and grounds of High Point as of last Saturday, June 28. That was the work of a group of youths from the *High Point Lighthouse Samoan Assembly of God* church at 34th Ave SW and SW Graham St. I’m told they began at about 7 am Saturday and picked up every block in the development–quietly, too.

Please join me in a big Thank You to the members of the church and especially the young people who were out there while many of us were sleeping in. THANKS, FOLKS!

Jeanette deserves at least a short round of applause for showing up at 6:45 am to hand out tools and help get things started.

Three days later, wrappers and bottles and other junk have already begun re-blighting the neighborhood. I’ll be out this afternoon to pick up litter on a couple of blocks near where I live–but wouldn’t it be nice if the High Point kids, the source of most of the litter, would feel some responsibility for neat streets and grounds around here? If you have any (useable) ideas about this, please chime in.

I didn’t know until I looked it up on the Internet that the state says it’s a “Class 3 Civil Infraction” to drop tiny amounts of trash where it doesn’t belong, and will impose a $50 fine. Check out RCW 70.93.060.

HPK9 Off Leash Playtime

Announcing a new Meetup for The High Point K9 Club (West Seattle)!

What: Off-leash playtime at Murphy’s Paw

When: July 27, 2008 12:00 PM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Who should come: Any pooches aching to get to know their 4-legged neighbors WITHOUT a darn leash on?

Why: Not only will your dog get some playtime with his neighbors, you’ll also get to give him (or her) a bath and NOT have to clean up the mess!

Meetup Description: PLAY TIME: Meetup at Murphy’s Paw for some playtime, treats, and a wonderful bath. This dog-centric business is located in a cute house just south of Roxbury on 17th. The back yard is fully fenced, allowing for off-leash play. Playtime is free, if you want to just come and socialize and sample the treats.

BATH TIME: They have very nice tubs at standing height so you won’t break your back! The water temperature is always nice and doesn’t fluctuate. They let you use fabulous shampoos, waterproof aprons to wear, and use all the towels you want - and then walk away! Patty took over and renamed this business in December and she is very nice. She named the shop after her dog Murphy.

Costs for bathing -
Small dogs: $15
Large dogs: $20

Treats - vary in pricing, are generally all organic and hand-made on site. Sophia is a picky girl and she has loved everything she has sampled so far.

HPK9 Meetup: Sunrise Cemetery Exploration

Posted June 29th, 2008 by Anna / Filed under: Events, Outdoor / 0 Comments »
July 4, 2008
9:00 amto11:00 am

Announcing a new Meetup for The High Point K9 Club (West Seattle)!

What: Sunrise Cemetery Exploration

When: FRIDAY July 4, 2008 9:00 AM

Where: Meet at the new Commons Park at the corner of 31st and Graham at 9 AM.

Meetup Description: Penny and Sophie will be leading a “civilized sunrise” 9 AM morning walk to and through our neighboring Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Considered one of the premier view points in Seattle, Forest Lawn has been in existence in West Seattle for over 100 years.

Forest Lawn Cemetery is located on the corner of S.W. Holly St. and Sylvan Way S.W. in West Seattle. West Seattle is the original home of Chief Sealth who had an Indian camp on Alki Point and whose name the city of Seattle is derived.

The history of Forest Lawn dates back to 1902 when the West Seattle Congregational Church founded the Montrepose Cemetery just east of where Mt. St. Vincent DePaul sets today. The Cemetery was moved to a larger parcel of land in 1906 (its current location) and in 1915 was renamed Forest Lawn. Robey G. Banta, a pioneer of several community newspapers, bought interest in the cemetery in 1915 and later acquired the property In 1937. Banta, daughter Helen and her husband Elmer Sears, took over management of Forest Lawn and are owners to this day.

This cemetery is not only laid out rows East and West, North and South, but / and \. Therefore, for the most part, to find a name within the cemetery you better stop by the office to get directions.
