What: Sunrise Cemetery Exploration

When: FRIDAY July 4, 2008 9:00 AM

Where: Meet at the new Commons Park at the corner of 31st and Graham at 9 AM.

Meetup Description: Penny and Sophie will be leading a “civilized sunrise” 9 AM morning walk to and through our neighboring Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Considered one of the premier view points in Seattle, Forest Lawn has been in existence in West Seattle for over 100 years.

Forest Lawn Cemetery is located on the corner of S.W. Holly St. and Sylvan Way S.W. in West Seattle. West Seattle is the original home of Chief Sealth who had an Indian camp on Alki Point and whose name the city of Seattle is derived.

The history of Forest Lawn dates back to 1902 when the West Seattle Congregational Church founded the Montrepose Cemetery just east of where Mt. St. Vincent DePaul sets today. The Cemetery was moved to a larger parcel of land in 1906 (its current location) and in 1915 was renamed Forest Lawn. Robey G. Banta, a pioneer of several community newspapers, bought interest in the cemetery in 1915 and later acquired the property In 1937. Banta, daughter Helen and her husband Elmer Sears, took over management of Forest Lawn and are owners to this day.

This cemetery is not only laid out rows East and West, North and South, but / and \. Therefore, for the most part, to find a name within the cemetery you better stop by the office to get directions.
